Maamiikwendan Gathering: Remembering Residential Schools & Cemeteries as Indigenous Sites of Conscience. October 16 from 1pm – 9:00pm and October 17 9:00am – 4:00pm.
The Fairmont in Winnipeg – 2 Lombard Place
As you may be aware, several First Nation communities and the Province of Manitoba declared a state of emergency for several areas in Southern Manitoba. We understand that areas of Portage la Prairie has been without power for at least 48 hours, including the venue for the Maamiikwendan Gathering.
To not add more hardship to communities and to free up hotel rooms for community members who need them in Portage la Prairie the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and the National Trust of Canada have been working to relocate the gathering to The Fairmont in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
If you have rooms and shuttles booked through the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, please be advised that your rooms and shuttles were switched to a new Winnipeg location. We ask for your patience while we reach out to conference delegates to provide the updated changes.
If you have not reserved a room through the NCTR and you are booked in Portage la Prairie, we would strongly encourage you to rebook your hotel room in Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you are having difficulty rebooking your room, the NCTR has reserved a block of rooms at various locations where our shuttles are operating. Please feel free to contact the NCTR at 1-855-415-4534 or 1-431-588-9285 and we will do our best to assist you.
Thank you for your patience and we wish you safe travels to the gathering!
Transportation and Shuttles in Winnipeg are available to the Fairmont. The shuttles will stop at the following hotels:
The Radisson – 288 Portage Ave, Winnipeg
The Best Western – 4140 Portage Ave, Headingley

This project has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the National Trust for Canada and the National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada.
Set at the site of the former Portage la Prairie Indian Residential School, Maamiikwendan will gather Indigenous voices from across Canada to discuss Residential School sites, commemorations of cemeteries, sharing culturally respectful research methods and advancing Reconciliation. Discussions will highlight challenges, solutions, cultural considerations and best practices.
Registration per person is $150.
There are limited subsidies available for Indigenous community members. Please contact the NCTR for more information at email@example.com or 204-474-6069.
